Blown away by the events of D.C.'s latest snowstorm

We've just been through a massive winter storm. What we should be celebrating is that there have been fewer deaths on the highway than would have occurred if it hadn't snowed and that people are doing well enough to complain. It's entirely rational for the government to make assumptions about how much snow will fall in a winter based on historic totals (almost nothing in the past five years) and to allocate about the right number of dollars.

This is a historic situation and exceeds officials' capacity to respond. State, county and Pepco employees are all making great efforts. We shouldn't blame them if the weather is bigger than they are.

If this were two hurricanes in a row, we would all be celebrating how quickly we were recovering.

Monica Hesse's Feb. 10 Style article, "The snow has fallen, and the flakes are on the road," exhibited the smugness and apathy that Washington is too often known for. Sure, I dislike the idiots attempting to drive their high-torque, rear-wheel-drive BMWs with racing slicks through this winter wonderland just as much as Ms. Hesse does, but instead of deriding them for their stupidity, how about helping give them a push or a hand digging out? Yeah, we can't comprehend why they're out driving. But does it really matter?

I think what this town needs is a lot less disparagement from the sidelines and a little more love and compassion. Snowstorms like this give us a great opportunity to show some real kindness and sacrifice, even if it is toward fools in a rut.
