Though crews work to clear snow, school leaders say extra effort from the community is needed.

Fairfax County public school officials asked volunteers to bring shovels, snow blowers and other equipment on Monday to schools to clear sidewalks, bus stops and fire hydrants. The school system had planned to make up a snow day on Presidents Day, but canceled classes.

Similarly, in Alexandria, schools asked volunteers to help shovel sidewalks and bus stops at elementary schools.

In Arlington County, residents are being asked to clear sidewalks. Acting county manager, Barbara Donnellan, says "it's going to take our whole village to get these children back to school."
