A man was struck and killed as he walked on Branch Avenue on Thursday to avoid snow-covered sidewalks, police said.

Asa Fukuhara, 32, of Hillcrest Heights, was walking south in the 3000 block of Branch Avenue toward the Metro station there when he was struck by a vehicle from behind, police said. Fukuhara was on his way to work at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, police said.

The striking vehicle did not stay on the scene after the crash, which occurred about 6 a.m., police said. Earlier Thursday, a police spokesman had said the driver remained on the scene.

Authorities closed Branch Avenue in both directions after the collision while an accident reconstruction team was summoned. Inbound traffic had to turn around in the parking lot of the Naylor Road Metro station.
