Fairfax County officials voted Tuesday to publicly advertise a budget proposal that could increase the residential property rate as much as 8 cents per $100 of assessed value.

The Board of Supervisors voted 8 to 2 to formally propose the budget plan, with Pat S. Herrity (R-Springfield) and John C. Cook (R-Braddock) voting against.

During his annual budget presentation two weeks ago, County Executive Anthony H. Griffin recommended a 5-cent increase for the residential tax rate, to $1.09 per $100 of assessed value, in his spending plan for the fiscal year starting July 1. An 8-cent increase, to $1.12, will be advertised as the highest possible increase that supervisors will consider.

The county is also advertising a 77-cent increase to its sewage rate, to $5.27 per 1,000 gallons of use.

Officials will hold public hearings next month before approving the final budget April 27.
