Drug probe arrests

The U.S. attorney's office for the District announced the arrest of eight people suspected of involvement in a drug ring in Barry Farms in Southeast Washington and other District neighborhoods.

The arrests came from a collaborative effort by the FBI, U.S. Park Police and police from the District and Prince George's County.

The suspects will be charged in the District's federal court. The arrests follow a six-count federal indictment Wednesday against 13 people charged with distributing PCP, heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine.

Messaging bill moves

A bill that would prohibit drivers from reading text messages is advancing through the Maryland legislature.

The bill, approved Thursday by a 135 to 2 vote in the House of Delegates, expands a law that bars drivers from writing and sending text messages while their vehicle is in motion or stopped in a traffic lane. The bill was sent to the state Senate.

Sending and receiving text messages is prohibited for drivers in the District and 20 other states, including Virginia.
