Vincent C. Gray, D.C. Council chairman

Current term: Jan. 2, 2007, to Jan. 2, 2011.

Ward 7 council member: Jan. 2, 2005, to Jan. 2, 2007.

Age: 67.

Education: Graduate of Dunbar High School; George Washington University, bachelor's degree in psychology.

Birthplace: The District.

Family: Two children and two grandchildren. Lives in the Hillcrest neighborhood of Ward 7. Wife died in 1998.

Career milestones

1991: Director of the D.C. Department of Human Services.

1994: Executive director of Covenant House, which serves homeless and at-risk youths.

2004: Elected Ward 7 council member, winning the November general election with 91 percent of the vote.

2006: Won the Democratic primary election for chairman of the D.C. Council.
