A number of tours will get you from Adelaide to Darwin, but we used this company, which caters to the cost-conscious young backpacker. The Rock Patrol trip, lasting six days, begins in Adelaide and ends in Alice Springs and costs roughly $600, which includes all meals and National Park and campground fees. The Track tour, which begins in Alice Springs and ends in Darwin, lasts three days, and costs roughly $300, meals and same fees included.
KEEP IN MIND
Time of year can matter when traveling in central Australia. We traveled in the winter (June-August), when it gets cold at night but is pleasantly warm during the day. In the summer (December-February), the days can be extremely hot and (in the northern part of the Northern Territory) rainy, and there's a greater chance that you'll be doing the unofficial Australian salute: the fly swat.
