GETTING THERE

Air Canada flies from Reagan National to Montreal and Quebec City, with fares starting at $376 round trip. The airline also flies from both cities to the city of Gaspe, the area's main regional hub. Round-trip fares start at about $422 from Montreal and $366 from Quebec City.

Accommodation in most of the Gaspe region is limited to camping, motels and B&Bs (called "gites" in French-speaking Quebec province).

From late May to October, offers a wide array of kayak, canoe and sailboat excursions at sea, as well as in the Gaspe's many rivers, from two-hour tours to six-day expeditions.

Ferries passengers to Bonaventure Island for about $25 (about $7 for children), and can also arrange fishing and whale-watching trips in the Perce region.
