U-Va. board to consider tuition hikes this week

The University of Virginia Board of Visitors meets this week and tuition increases for the 2010-2011 academic year are expected to be on the agenda.

On the table is a proposal to increase in-state tuition and fees for undergraduate students by nearly 10 percent, or by $956.

For out-of-state students, tuition and fees would increase by 6 percent, or by more than $1,900.

University officials say cuts in state funding have forced them to ask students to pay more for their education.

Last week, Virginia Tech officials cited similar reasons when they imposed tuition and fees increases for next school year.
