Floral, feminine, flirty -- the tried-and-true harbingers of spring fashion. Pretty? Yes. Revolutionary? Not exactly. This season, designers approached warm-weather staples from a new angle, injecting their collections with a healthy dose of athleticism. Whether you prefer the polished prep of tennis sweaters or the streetwise flair of a flashy windbreaker, the current crop of spring duds is designed with the sporty-chic shopper in mind.

1

Don't be fooled by the modest cut and sturdy racerback styling -- the sheer paneling on this H&M bathing suit adds a subtle sexiness to an otherwise demure one-piece. $24.95 at H&M stores.

2

Burberry's Christopher Bailey blended notes of red ginger, sea salt and cedar in Burberry Sport, the fashion house's newest scent. Both the men's and women's eau de toilettes are packaged in rubberized casings, which lend a sense of rough-and-tumble athleticism. $47 to $78 at department stores and www.burberry.com.

3

Worn over a body-conscious sheath or paired with skinny jeans, this motorcycle-style Run Image jacket by Stella McCartney for Adidas is a decidedly 21st-century cotton coverup. $200 at www.shopadidas.com; also available in metallic blue.

4

Under creative director Alex Carleton, L.L. Bean recently launched the Signature collection, a capsule line that updates the retailer's preppy basics. The small Downeaster sport canvas bag offers a utilitarian take on the weekend tote. $54 at www.llbeansignature.com; also available in navy and white.

In eye-popping acid yellow, Lacoste's Cassidae canvas sneakers inject a splash of energy to spring's palette of understated neutrals. $95 at select Macy's stores; call (800) 925-4848 to order.
