7:30 P.M., BANANA CAFE AND PIANO BAR, CAPITOL HILL
William: I was pretty nervous because I'd never been on a blind date before. I got home from work and threw on some different pants. I walked over to the restaurant and got a table outside.
Chloe: My friend drove me there. We got to the area at, like, 6:15 and had a drink down the street, to calm my nerves. Then I walked up to the restaurant pretty much at exactly 7:30. I saw him sitting outside, and I kind of knew it was him. He just looked sort of expectant. I walked inside and said, "I'm here for The Washington Post," and they walked me out.
William: She was pretty tall, blond. She was cute, but she looks a little bit different [from my type]. For me, it's on a case-by-case basis, [but] I guess my type would be blond, but not [just] any blonde. [Looks are] not the most important thing, but I think it was kind of tending toward friend zone for me right there.
Chloe: He's kind of tall and thin, really nice features, clear skin. He's a little bit prettier than people I'd normally think of dating. I tend to go for a bit more scruffy.
William: We introduced ourselves and got the awkward jitters out of the way. Right away, we got along and had a lot to talk about.
Chloe: Early on, he said that he was still an undergrad, and I was like, Okay, I guess that means you're young. I'm only 24, but I've been out of school a couple of years. I was kind of disappointed; I was just expecting someone older. And he mentioned that he had modeled. It didn't seem like he was full of himself or cocky the way he said that. [But] I was like, Whoa, we are not compatible at all. I guess I just felt that our lifestyles were probably different and we weren't interested in the same things.
William: I try not to talk about [modeling] too much because it's a little weird bringing it up right away, but it's definitely a fun thing I've done. She told me pretty quickly that she usually dated older guys and that she was surprised they set her up with a younger guy. It didn't matter at all to me.
Chloe: We didn't have a really deep, intellectual conversation -- more along the lines of what we like doing on the weekends and the kind of things that we think are funny. It wasn't shallow at all, it just wasn't like, "So, what's the last book you read? What's your philosophy on life?" [But] as the night went on, it started becoming apparent that we had similar senses of humor and similar personalities than it seemed [at first].
William: We definitely had a good rapport. And we did have things in common. We've both worked with kids, so we were talking about funny stories with kids, and we both lived in New York, so we were talking about that and cracking up about the whole New York life versus D.C. life. We were cracking each other up.
Chloe: I wasn't really thinking too hard about [chemistry], and I'm really unsure honestly [if we had any]. We were both really open about, "This is so much fun, whether it's in a friend way or not."
William: For me, either there's a connection or not, and this time there wasn't. I think you kind of know right away. It was really just getting to know her and having a good time and enjoying some delicious Mexican food. I think around 9:30 we were getting full. So we went across the street to a bar and had a beer.
Chloe: We started talking about the pictures, and we were like, "Let's just walk around and get random people to take pictures of us." That was probably the most fun part, walking around and taking silly pictures.
William: I think we [parted] around 10:30. We hugged and had a friendly peck on the cheek. We Facebook-friended each other that night.
Chloe: Overall, I'd [rate the date] a 4.5 [out of 5] because it was just really fun and awesome. As a romantic connection, I'd have to rate it a 3.5.
William: As an outing I'd give it a 4.5, we had a really fun time. But as a romantic date it was, like, friend zone, maybe a 3.
