The longtime linebacker signed a ceremonial contract with the Dolphins at their training facility so he could leave the game as part of the franchise he spent 12 seasons with.

With Miami, Thomas had 1,038 tackles, 19 1/2 sacks and 17 interceptions in 168 games, and he was chosen for seven Pro Bowls.

GOLF

Virginia Tech shot an opening round 4-over-par 284 and is tied with Northwestern for fifth place at the NCAA Notre Dame Regional at the 7,023-yard, par-70 Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The Hokies, the 11th seed entering the tournament, had all five players shoot between 70 and 73.

The 19th-ranked Virginia men's golf team opened play at the Yale Regional in New Haven, Conn., by shooting 1-over 282. The Cavaliers are tied with sixth-ranked UCLA for sixth place in the 14-team field. . . .

Jason Day birdied four of his first six holes on his way to a 4-under 66 for a share of the first-round lead when play was suspended at the Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Tex.

The threatening skies that sent Day fetching his umbrella never actually produced, but forced a delay of 3 hours 44 minutes.

Joe Durant finished with an eagle and a birdie to match Day at 66. Steve Elkington, Hunter Mahan and Jarrod Lyle were still on the course with scores of 4-under.. . . .

Michelle Wie survived a tight opening match against Stacy Prammanasudh in the LPGA's Match Play Championship in Gladstone, N.J., taking the lead with a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th and winning, 2 up.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Matt Henry, the director of operations for the Georgetown men's basketball team, is leaving the Hilltop after six seasons to join the coaching staff of former Hoyas assistant Robert Burke at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.

Burke, who was an assistant to Thompson for eight seasons (four at Princeton, four at Georgetown), was introduced as Mount St. Mary's head coach May 10 after one season on Jeff Jones's staff at American.
