Two veteran TV journalists have taken buyouts offers from WUSA (Channel 9) and will be leaving the station early next month.

Dave Statter, who covered crime and public-safety issues for the station for 25 years, will start a media consulting business for fire and emergency management agencies. Audrey Barnes, a reporter-anchor at WUSA for the past seven years, said she will also become a media consultant and train reporters.

Among other stories, Statter reported on the death of University of Maryland basketball star Len Bias in 1986. He also covered several hurricanes and the arrest of the D.C. sniper suspects in 2002.

Barnes and Statter are among five veteran reporters who have left Channel 9 since the station switched to a new newsgathering system last year, replacing traditional news crews with "one-man bands" that shoot, report and edit stories single-handedly.
