Suspect in Montgomery custody dies suddenly; might have eaten crack cocaine

Tuesday, May 25, 2010; B04

A man who might have eaten crack cocaine died after being placed in Montgomery County police custody Monday, officials said.

Just after 11 a.m., police were called to the 14600 block of Devereaux Terrace in North Potomac for reported drug activity. Officers found a parked black Jeep with several people inside.

Police questioned a man in the driver's seat and determined that he was wanted on unrelated charges. When they took him into custody, "they noticed he was chewing on something," police said. At some point, the unidentified man began having seizures.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers found a small amount of crack cocaine in the vehicle.

An autopsy is pending, and detectives are investigating.
