A man was found fatally stabbed early Sunday at a Southeast Washington Metro station D.C. police said.

He was found at the Congress Heights Station, at the top of an escalator leading to street level, police said. A second man who had been stabbed, apparently in the same incident, was found near the below-ground station kiosk, police said.

A third person, who, according to preliminary investigation may have suffered a medical problem during the stabbings of the other two, was taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

Metro said the man who was killed was 21, but he was not identified further. Police were waiting last night to notify his relatives.

There was no immediate indication of a clear motive in the attacks. Police said they were investigating several possibilities, including robbery.

It was not exactly clear where the incidents occurred, and the attack may have involved a struggle that occurred in several locations.

Police said, however, that they did not believe that the stabbings occurred on a train. Such an attack would be highly unusual. The rail system closes at midnight on most nights but remains open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

D.C. police said officers were called to the station about 2:50 a.m. Metro said its officers were also called there. The matter is being investigated by D.C. police because a homicide is involved, Metro said.

When the D.C. officers reached the station, which is on the Green Line just south of St. Elizabeths Hospital, they found an unconscious man with stab wounds, police said.

Rescue personnel were called and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:25 a.m.

The second stabbing victim was released from a hospital after treatment, the police said.

In another homicide in the District, Edward Pope, 26, of the 100 block of 53rd Street SE was found shot in a house in that block about 4:35 a.m. police said.
