Man killed trying to make U-turn

A 76-year-old Upper Marlboro man was killed Tuesday when his van was struck by a car as he tried to make a U-turn on Route 301 in the Cheltenham area, police said.

The man, whom police have not identified, was making a U-turn to the southbound side of Route 301 near Frank Tippett Road when he was struck, police said. An 18-year-old male passenger in his van and the driver of the car, a 57-year-old woman, were also injured, but they were treated at a hospital and released, police said.

The crash occurred just before 11 a.m. Maryland State Police said in a news release that the driver of the van "failed to yield to oncoming traffic."

Girl shot in head on Monday dies

A 16-year-old girl shot in the head Monday outside an apartment complex in Greenbelt died in a hospital Wednesday, authorities said.

Police have yet to make any arrests in the case or say whether they think the girl was targeted. They also have not identified her. They said after the shooting that the girl was shot by a male assailant, who then fled.

The incident occurred about 7:45 p.m. Monday in the 5900 block of Cherrywood Lane. The girl was pronounced dead about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.
