CHESAPEAKE BAY

Man struck by boat in hit-and-run

A 55-year-old Northern Virginia man was injured Saturday in the Chesapeake Bay in what authorities described as a hit-and-run incident.

Maryland Natural Resources Police said Mark Gentile, a resident of the Alexandria area, was hit by a boat while in the water near the Thomas Point lighthouse. The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. between Fishing Creek and South River.

Gentile was struck after jumping from his anchored sailboat to retrieve a minnow pot, police said. He swam back to his boat, where he used a line to stay afloat as a passenger on his boat called 911. Gentile slipped under the surface, but police and Coast Guard personnel rescued him, police said.

He was taken to the Annapolis Coast Guard station and then the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police said he was struck by a white-and-champagne 21-foot Donzi type vessel. Its occupants were described as a white man and woman in their 30s or 40s.

Police ask that anyone with information on the incident call 410-260-8888 or 800-628-9944 and ask for officer Murray Hunt.
