Letters: Hospice, Alzheimer's Association aid family caregivers; marrow donors
The public should know that while donors join the bone marrow registry for free, recruitment groups such as ours pay lab costs of anywhere from $50 to $100 per swab kit.
What transplant patients need most is legislation that will mandate that insurance companies cover their donor's/subscriber's cost of bone marrow tissue typing so they can join the public registry. This is already happening in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
One person can make an incredible difference. Donors say that receiving the phone call about the match is like winning the lottery. Any reader between the age of 18 and 61 can be someone's miracle match.
