One man was fatally shot and another man critically wounded in a market Wednesday in the wholesale district of Northeast Washington, D.C. police said.

Police were called to a store in the 1300 block of Fifth Street about 3 p.m., said officer Paul Metcalf, a police spokesman.

One man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening wounds to the upper body and remained in critical condition Wednesday night. The other man died at the scene.

Police did not identify either victim or release other details about the incident.

"We have some tremendous leads, and I'm confident we're going to close this case," Chief Cathy L. Lanier said in an interview. She declined to release details about the investigation.

A police source said investigators were trying to determine whether the shootings occurred during a robbery. Investigators said they think that the store was a family-owned business and that the victims might have been related to each other, another source said.

Police were searching for a silver car that left the area, which might have had two men inside. The store is just north of Florida Avenue, where wholesale vendors sell produce and merchandise to many corner markets across the city.
