A 6-year-old girl died Wednesday after being pulled from a pool at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in Northeast Washington, fire officials said.
Fire and rescue officials were called to the center, at 1100 Michigan Ave., about 2:15 p.m. They found bystanders performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the girl, said Pete Piringer, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Relatives were with her, he said.
A lifeguard was on duty during the incident, according to preliminary reports.
The girl's name was not released. She was taken to Children's National Medical Center about 2:35 p.m. and was later pronounced dead, Piringer said.
John A. Stokes, a spokesman for the Department of Parks and Recreation, said his agency and D.C. police were investigating the circumstances of the drowning. The pool was expected to reopen on schedule Thursday, he said.
