Religion through the lens of Post photographer Katherine Frey.

Under a canopy of trees in a small Southwest D.C. park, a dozen people gathered to celebrate the summer solstice Sunday.

The goal of the event, Organized by Connect D.C., was to create shade under the heat of the sun, a reference to find the "refreshing oasis inside ourselves."

The Wiccan-based public ritual group seeks to heal and transform the District and itself through magic, mystery and celebration.

After purifying and grounding themselves with a zinnia dipped in water, members of the group cast a circle and honored the sun goddess, Amatersu, and the Potomac River. Singing, laughter and not being afraid to "let your inner-dork hang out" were part of the hour-long event. As founder Katrina Messenger said, "Humor is one of the magical tools." Added Adam Miramon, "So is laughter."
