It's the most wonderful time of the year: The Food section's 2010 Top Tomato recipe contest is officially open and accepting entries.

Recipes must be original (honor system here, folks), must come from home cooks (chefs, put down your knives) and must have no more than 10 ingredients (including salt and pepper). Participants may enter as many as five recipes.

We've seen lots of soups and fresh pasta sauces, so if you plan to send a recipe for either, make sure it's something special.

We like a good (short) back story, too.

The winners will be featured in our special tomato issue on Aug. 11; prizes will be revealed in upcoming notices.

Send recipes to: Recipe Contest, The Food Section, 1150 15th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20071; or by e-mail, with "RECIPE CONTEST" in the subject field, to food@washpost.com. Deadline for entries is July 15. Include your name, address and daytime phone number. If you have questions, send them via e-mail and we'll answer ASAP. Readers do not have to live in the Washington area.

Tips from the judges: Be sure to list the ingredients in the order they are used in the recipe directions. If you sent in recipes for previous years' contests, please do not enter the same ones.
