-- Green Acres Elementary, Fairfax City. Consolidation plan called for closing small, aging school. Students moved to the expanded Providence Elementary (formerly Jermantown Elementary) in Fairfax County. (Decision made by city board.)

-- Lorton Elementary, Lorton. Substandard facilities and fire damage. Students moved to Silverbrook Elementary in Fairfax Station

1985

-- Fort Hunt High and Groveton High, both in the Alexandria area. Consolidation plan called for closing schools with declining enrollment. Students moved to West Potomac High School in the Alexandria area.

-- Stephen Foster Intermediate. Consolidation plan called for closing school with declining enrollment. Students moved to Carl Sandburg Middle in the Alexandria area.

-- William Cullen Bryant Intermediate. Consolidation plan called for closing school with declining enrollment. Students moved to Carl Sandburg Middle.

-- Walt Whitman Middle, Alexandria area. Consolidation plan required move from Richmond Highway to Parkers Lane.
