A 27-year-old District resident was fatally shot early Sunday near the East Capitol Street corridor and the city's eastern edge.

D.C. police said James E. Johnson was found about 12:35 a.m. in the unit block of 58th Street SE.

Johnson lived in the 600 block of 49th Street NE, police said.

He was dead on the scene when police found him, authorities said.

No motive for the shooting could be learned, and no information about any suspect was available.

The scene of the shooting is a few hundred yards from Southern Avenue SE, which forms the boundary between the District and Prince George's County.

It is about one-quarter of a mile west of the Capitol Heights station on the Metro Blue Line.
