The most transformative part of being contestants on "The Biggest Loser" for Stacey and Adam Capers of Prince William County wasn't anything that happened on the reality-TV show. It was getting kicked off.

The folks remaining on camera had trainers yelling at them during daily seven-hour workouts, and no worries about grocery shopping and other pedestrian errands. But the Caperses were back in their jobs, taking care of their two kids and paying their own way. "We had to motivate ourselves," Stacey says. "It wasn't easy."

Yet by the finale, the Gainesville couple had lost a combined 145 pounds and had gained a sustainable lifestyle. "We realized we had a program that worked for us. In the end, you have to do that anyway. So it was a harder adjustment for everyone else," she says.

Their program started with a kitchen pantry reorganization purging all junk food, a commitment to keeping food journals and a plan to exercise two hours a day (split between two workouts). Dinner menus had more leafy greens and fewer carbs. Most important, Capers says, was "staying motivated and creative," to constantly find different ways to keep active.

They're not slowing down anytime soon. In the year-and-a-half since the show ended, they've launched I Can Do Fitness, a company that offers exercise programs and classes, while keeping their regular jobs. Stacey's schedule is packed with races and personal appearances.

The week they spent on the show was the jump-start they needed to make permanent changes. " 'Biggest Loser' provided the opportunity, and then we were ready," Stacey said. And it shows focusing on your health, for even a short period of time, can lead to long-term results.
