Date Lab: He's got a bad-boy past. Is that a good thing?
7:30 p.m., Hudson, Dupont Circle
Jerry: I got there about 20 minutes early and introduced myself to the hostess, who showed me to the table. A little while later, she came over to tell me Krystal called to say she was running about 10 minutes late. It was cool. It's just how things go. It gave me time to collect my nerves. The hostess walked her over to me. I was like, Wow. She's a very beautiful woman. I started to extend my hand, but it's kind of odd to shake a woman's hand, so I hugged her hello.
Krystal: The hostess introduced us, and he stood up and gave me a hug, which was nice. He's very attractive. He's tall, and he had a nice smile, which is the first thing I noticed. I liked what he was wearing. He had on a denim shirt and khaki pants and these shoes that were along the lines of Converse All Stars. And he had these really nice glasses on. It was nice to be on a date with someone who wasn't in a suit and tie. We sat down and started talking. We talked for about 20 minutes before we ordered drinks.
Jerry: Our conversation ran the gamut. What we do for fun, for a living, school and family. We are both shopaholics. We talked a little bit of fashion. She had on this black cocktail dress and a cool necklace she got in London. We both like going to museums and different exhibits. We talked about D.C. night life -- we both like lounges and more intimate settings, rather than the big nightclub scene.
Krystal: It was cool that we have a lot of the same hobbies -- shopping, movies, being outside. [His interest in fashion] was something different. That kind of drew me to him. It was a breath of fresh air. We both like to cook. He pretty much had me when he told me he knows how to make a six-layer lasagna. He asked me what was my signature dish. I told him chicken Alfredo. I told him I make it from scratch. He teased me and asked me if I make my own pasta and killed my own chicken.
Jerry: The conversation really flowed. We never had awkward silences, and it felt like we'd known each other a long time. We didn't even order until after 8:30. We shared the calamari as an appetizer and each got an entree.
Krystal: We talked about our families, where we went to school, where we're from. The neighborhood where I live now is near where he grew up.
Jerry: I told her that growing up as a child, we used to steal bikes from her building. She was like, "Wow, thanks for letting me know about your bad-boy past."
Krystal: I am kind of attracted to bad boys. He wasn't a goody-goody growing up. It was kind of a little turn-on. I thought it was kind of funny that it was from my building. And his demeanor was jokingly apologetic about it. When he told me, he said, "Don't hold it against me." Later, I was telling him that I like to ride my bike around the city. He told me he just had his bike stolen. I told him that was karma.
Jerry: It was 11:30, and we were almost the last folks in the restaurant. It was getting late. We asked for the check. We had gone over the [Date Lab budget]. We both reached for our wallets. I gave her this Denzel Washington look and said, "I got it."
Krystal: That was impressive. Most dudes would ask to go halves. He was a complete gentleman. At the end of the date, we were leaving the restaurant. He offered to take me home. I said no, because he had a ways to go. He walked me to get a cab, even though it was away from where he parked. And he walked on the street side of the [sidewalk]. Guys just don't do that now.
Jerry: Before she got into the taxi, I asked for her number. We exchanged info. I asked her to text me when she got home. She asked me to do the same.
Krystal: I gave him a hug. He gave me a nice, strong, tight hug. He smelled good. When I got home, I texted him and told him I really enjoyed myself. I'm hoping that we will [go out again]. To me, it felt like a really good date. As far as a spark, there's definitely potential.
Jerry: I'd give the date a 4.7 [out of 5]. I'm looking forward to many more dates with Krystal.
Krystal: I would give the date a 4.5. I would give it a 5 if he had magically made a six-layer lasagna appear.

Update: Jerry and Krystal say they've been talking almost every day since the date. They're planning to meet up again in person once Jerry's done moving into his new place.
