The National Symphony Orchestra has a new music director. That's the biggest event on the Washington classical music calendar this season. Christoph Eschenbach is one of the best-known names in the conducting field, and the orchestra musicians are openly thrilled at his arrival. Check out the Beethoven Ninth this month, Mahler's Fifth and the "Kindertotenlieder" next month, or the all-American program celebrating the anniversary of John F. Kennedy's inauguration in January to get your own sense of whether the chemistry will work. -- Anne Midgette
