Build Confidence with Andrew Johnson ($2.99) is a self-help app that provides a guided meditation/relaxation experience.

The main part of the app is a sound file with tranquil music playing while relaxation coach, clinical hypnotherapist, EFT therapist, and Reiki teacher Andrew Johnson guides you through some relaxation techniques and offers some affirmations to help build your confidence. The program's strong point is Johnson's voice, which is extremely soothing and relaxing with a nice Scottish brogue. The music is pleasant, too.

Though Build Confidence is essentially an MP3, it does include some options. For instance, you can choose to play instructions at the beginning or to skip them, you can specify the long introduction or the short one, you can select how many times (up to nine) you want the main program to repeat, and you can choose to end the program with Sleep or Wake.

HiveBrain Software, the app's developer, offers a total of 16 self-help programs--from Relax (the only one available in a free lite version) to Positivity, Quit Drinking, and Exam Prep--each priced at $2.99.

Build Confidence is an effective relaxation guide. When I put it in sleep mode, I succeeded in nodding off peacefully. I also used the program in wake mode before going to a big interview, and the warmup helped me feel a little more grounded, relaxed, and confident than I might otherwise have. Andrew Johnson has a superb voice, but I think the price for this app is a bit too high.
