Bloomberg, the New York giant of financial news and data, is hiring more than 100 people in Washington and has leased new space as it prepares to launch its Web-based government information venture, Bloomberg Government.
Bloomberg calls the new unit, aimed at government officials, industry executives and lobbyists, "a comprehensive resource for understanding the business implications of government action in real time."
The company has developed a Web site, BGov.com, that is in development and scheduled to become available to subscribers in January. It has posted around 100 jobs in Washington for editors, reporters, analysts, Web producers, sales representatives and product managers. Editorial posts focus on major industries including health care, energy, defense, infrastructure and telecommunications.
Sarah Feinberg, spokeswoman for Bloomberg global communications and business strategy, said the company expects to make 100 hires by the end of the year and continue adding people after the launch in 2011.
"We will be providing deep, reliable, quick, unbiased reporting on government and business, paired with comprehensive data and analysis," she said via e-mail. "In order to provide the most thorough coverage possible, we are hiring journalists interested in combining reporting with in-depth analysis and policy."
Bloomberg, which has more than 2,400 journalists in 146 bureaus internationally, has its Washington headquarters at 1399 New York Ave. NW -- less than a block from the U.S. Treasury -- but recently leased space at 1875 K St. NW, a building owned by Shorenstein Realty Services, to accommodate its growth. Cassidy Turley, the building's leasing agent, declined to comment.
Bloomberg's hiring comes in stark contrast to other major media companies, which have been cutting costs and struggling to find new sources of revenue.
Gannett, based in McLean, announced last month that it was restructuring USA Today to focus on digital operations and would lay off 130 workers.
CQ-Roll Call Group, a competing provider of news and information on the federal government, announced its own real estate move recently, agreeing to lease 71,500 square feet at 77 K St. NE, a new building in the NoMa neighborhood north of Union Station, where it will move by April 2011. The company will consolidate three offices from around the region there, following Roll Call Group's purchase of Congressional Quarterly in 2009.
