Admirably restrained

Why is Mark Plotkin ["Obama's stunning silence," op-ed, Sept. 23] so offended by President Obama's restraint in calling the Democratic nominee for mayor of Washington?

I agree with much of Mr. Plotkin's concern regarding the need for the president's attention to the city, and I congratulate D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray on winning the nomination.

However, the president of the greatest democracy in the world is acting as a responsible role model by allowing the full election process to play out, including the November elections, before he makes a congratulatory call.
