Where's best for the bird feeder

Thursday, September 30, 2010; VA09

Place bird feeders in an open area, at least nine to 10 feet from vegetation.

Provide some shrubs so birds can hide from hawks. Clip the shrubs at ground level to deny cover for stalking cats.

Elevate bird feeders so that they are at least six feet from the ground.

Capture scattered seeds with trays to prevent ground feeding.

Do not feed your pet cat outdoors, as this may draw strays. For people with feral cats in their neighborhood, the Humane Society of the United States offers tips and local resources at http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/feral_cats.

Keep your own cat indoors, and ask neighbors to do the same.
