Friday, October 1, 2010; 12:10 AM

PHIL MICKELSON

Age: 40.

World ranking: 2.

Ryder Cup teams: 7.

Ryder Cup record: 10-14-6.

Career victories: 40.

Majors: Masters (3), PGA Championship (1).

2010 victories: Masters.

Finished atop the Ryder Cup standings for the first time in his career, and the only American to win a major this year. That's the good news. He has been as unpredictable as ever, going from missing the cut to being in contention.

HUNTER MAHAN

Age: 28.

World ranking: 14.

Ryder Cup teams: 1.

Ryder Cup record: 2-0-3.

Career victories: 3.

Majors: None.

2010 victories: Phoenix Open, WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

For the first time, he's not a captain's pick. He earned his way on with victories in Phoenix and at Firestone. He was the only American to play in all five matches in 2008. His ball-striking is as good as anyone on the team.

BUBBA WATSON

Age: 31.

World ranking: 24.

Ryder Cup teams: Rookie.

Ryder Cup record: 0-0-0.

Career victories: 1.

Majors: None.

2010 victories: Travelers Championship.

There is nothing conventional about Watson, from his extraordinary length to playing just about every shot, even a 70-yard sand wedge, with some shape to it. He once got spooked around cameras, so this could be an eye-opener.

JIM FURYK

Age: 40.

World ranking: 5.

Ryder Cup teams: 6.

Ryder Cup record: 8-13-3.

Career victories: 16.

Majors: U.S. Open (1).

2010 victories: Transitions Championship, Heritage, Tour Championship.

He has lost only one singles match, but has only one victory (1-7-1) in fourballs. He earned the $10 million prize as champion of the FedEx Cup with a dramatic win last Sunday in the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

STEVE STRICKER

Age: 43.

World ranking: 4.

Ryder Cup teams: 1.

Ryder Cup record: 0-2-1.

Career victories: 9.

Majors: None.

2010 victories: Northern Trust Open, John Deere Classic.

He is playing only his second Ryder Cup and still hasn't won a match in three games, losing to Ian Poulter in singles. Has won five times in the last two years to cement his status among the elite.

DUSTIN JOHNSON

Age: 26.

World ranking: 12.

Ryder Cup teams: Rookie.

Ryder Cup record: 0-0-0.

Career victories: 4.

Majors: None.

2010 victories: Pebble Beach, BMW Championship.

He has become known for his power, skill and hard luck. Lost a three-shot lead with an 82 in the U.S. Open's final round, and lost a spot in the PGA Championship playoff after a bunker ruling led to a two-shot penalty.

JEFF OVERTON

Age: 27.

World ranking: 48.

Ryder Cup teams: Rookie.

Ryder Cup record: 0-0-0.

Career victories: None.

Majors: None.

2010 victories: None.

No one played more consistently in the months leading to the end of qualifying. After making the team, missed the cut in one event and failed to crack the top 50 in three. First American to make the team without a PGA Tour win.

MATT KUCHAR

Age: 32.

World ranking: 11.

Ryder Cup teams: Rookie.

Ryder Cup record: 0-0-0.

Career victories: 3.

Majors: None.

2010 victories: Barclays.

No one has been more consistent this year than Kuchar, who has a PGA Tour-leading 11 top-10s. He has been playing his best golf lately, including his five-shot rally to win the Barclays and contending all week at Cog Hill.

STEWART CINK

Age: 37.

World ranking: 35.

Ryder Cup teams: 4.

Ryder Cup record: 4-7-4.

Career victories: 6.

Majors: British Open (1).

2010 victories: None.

Made the team as a captain's pick for the third time, an American record. He also was the first U.S. captain's pick to play in all five matches, in 2006, when he lost only one match. His strength in the matches is being unflappable.

TIGER WOODS

Age: 34.

World ranking: 1.

Ryder Cup teams: 5.

Ryder Cup record: 10-13-2.

Career victories: 82.

Majors: Masters (4), U.S. Open (3), Brit. Open (3), PGA (4).

2010 victories: None.

A fascinating year for all the wrong reasons - the five-month layoff from being caught cheating on his wife, a summer finalizing a divorce, his highest 36-and 72-hole scores ever and no wins for the first time in his career.

ZACH JOHNSON

Age: 34.

World ranking: 19.

Ryder Cup teams: 1.

Ryder Cup record: 1-2-1.

Career victories: 7.

Majors: Masters (1).

2010 victories: Colonial.

He is the only captain's pick to have won a tournament this year. On a team loaded with power, Johnson brings exquisite wedge play and reliable putting. Tiger Woods often jokes with him, "I wish I could putt like you."

RICKIE FOWLER

Age: 21.

World ranking: 33.

Ryder Cup teams: Rookie.

Ryder Cup record: 0-0-0.

Career victories: None.

Majors: None.

2010 victories: None.

The youngest American on the Ryder Cup team since Tiger Woods in 1997. He has showed remarkable potential in being a runner-up twice, and few question the skill and energy he brings to the U.S. team.
