The Senate race in Washington has attracted significant national attention as Democratic incumbent Sen. Patty Murray is fighting an uphill reelection battle against Dino Rossi, a rising Republican politician in Washington.

As WhoRunsGov explains:

The daughter of a disabled World War II veteran, Patty Murray grew up without health insurance and worked her way through college. A disparaging comment by a state senator inspired her to launch a political career, and she moved quickly from her local school board to the state Senate to become Washington state's first female senator.

Murray is one of the most prodigious earmarkers in the Senate, a practice that has been criticized by government watchdog groups and fellow senators. She faces former state Sen. and ex-gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi (R) in a tough 2010 reelection race.
