Rhode Island's gubenatorial race has come down to a three-way contest between Democrat Frank Caprio, Republican John Robitaille and Independent fmr. Senator Lincoln Chafee.
As AP reported:
Rhode Island. Independent Lincoln Chafee and Democrat Frank Caprio are seen as front-runners with GOP candidate John Robitaille trailing. Chafee is well known as a former Republican U.S. senator who bolted the party in 2007.
Michelle Smith of the Associated Press also reported on how Obama's lack of endorsement of Democrat Caprio or Independent Chafee is noticeably lacking:
Weeks before Rhode Island's 2008 Democratic presidential primary, former Republican U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee made a high-profile endorsement of Barack Obama.
Now, less than two weeks before the Nov. 2 election that pits Chafee, an independent, against Democratic General Treasurer Frank Caprio and two others in the race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Don Carcieri, Obama appears to be repaying that respect to Chafee by not yet endorsing Caprio. Obama's scheduled to come to the state Monday to fundraise for congressional candidates, but has no scheduled events with Caprio.
