Going Out Guide: Howard University homecoming, Yardfest, DJ Chris Washington

Howard University's homecoming is about more than a football game. Would a mere college sporting event be immortalized in rhymes by Biggie and Ludacris, play host to live performances by Kanye West or P. Diddy and have thousands of non-alumni pouring into town to hit packed nightclub parties? This is a multiday celebration of music, fashion and tradition. The university hosts a full slate of events, which you can find on http://www.bisonhomecoming.com, but some of the most popular, and promising, are the unofficial ones listed below.

Grits and Gravy

One of the highlights of homecoming is Grits and Gravy, which has the warm vibe of a house party (the hosts promise "no drama, no stress") and a soundtrack of '80s hip-hop and house that pulls multiple generations of alumni onto the dance floor. Arrive before 8 p.m. for food and drink specials.

Thursday, 6 p.m.-2 a.m. Jin Lounge, 2017 14th St. NW. Free admission.

Design of a Decade

"The Legendary" DJ Chris Washington, a Howard alum and veteran party rocker who has a weekend show on New York's WBLS-FM, spins old-school tunes all night on the two-level back patio and bar at Glover Park's expansive Blue Ridge.

Friday, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Blue Ridge, 2340 Wisconsin Ave. NW. http://designofadecade.eventbrite.com. $20.
