Martin O'Malley (D)*

Age: 47

Residence: Annapolis.

Education: BA, public policy, Catholic University; JD, University of Maryland School of Law.

Occupation: Governor, Maryland.

Elected offices/civic activities: Governor, Maryland, 2007-present; mayor, Baltimore, 1999-2007; member, Baltimore City Council, 1991-99.

What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"I believe there is no more powerful place in our state than a family's home and nothing more important for protecting that home than a job. To keep moving Maryland forward, our goal, our mission, our focus must continue to be on creating, saving and retaining Maryland jobs. During these difficult times, we have fared better than most -- retaining jobs better than all but four states, maintaining an unemployment rate 25 percent below the national average and maintaining an AAA bond rating. But although significant progress has been made, more needs to be done to keep Maryland moving forward."

Why should voters elect you?

"In this election, the choice could not be more clear: Will we move forward or back? Let's move forward with a governor on our side."
