The discovery near the 11700 block of Parklawn Drive caused long delays for hundreds of homebound commuters on the MARC Brunswick Line, which runs between Union Station and Martinsburg, W.Va.

MARC said late Tuesday that the outbound delays could affect this morning's inbound service, citing federal requirements for crew off-duty time.

Little information was available late Tuesday about the person who died or how the death occurred. Police said the person apparently was struck by a train. The time of death was not known.

Police said they went to Parklawn Drive about 5:30 p.m. after a jogger reported possible human remains at the tracks.

The tracks carry freight, commuter and Amtrak trains. The neighborhood where the discovery was made was described as commercial.

The discovery affected five westbound MARC trains. Four were held at Union Station until the tracks reopened. One was halted at Garrett Park. A spokesman for MARC said he believed its passengers were taken by shuttle bus to Rockville. Another MARC train had been sent to Rockville from Martinsburg to pick them up.

About 9 p.m., MARC reported the track was open again.
