Nickles prepares to subpoena Thomas

D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles was preparing to issue a subpoena Tuesday evening to D.C. Council member Harry Thomas Jr. for documents related to his oversight of a nonprofit organization that is not registered with the Internal Revenue Service or in good standing with city regulators.

Nickles said Thomas (D-Ward 5) failed to voluntarily turn over the information.

Last week, Nickles sent Thomas a letter asking for financial and other information about the donors and leaders of Team Thomas, which the council member bills as a community nonprofit.

Thomas responded by requesting that Nickles give him more time. But Nickles said Tuesday that Thomas's time had run out.

"I am issuing the subpoena, and if he doesn't give me the documents I called for by Friday, I will go into court," Nickles said.

Thomas was not immediately available to comment Tuesday. Tim Day, Thomas's GOP opponent in the Nov. 2 general election, has accused Thomas of using Team Thomas as "a slush fund."
