Jennie M. Forehand (D)*

Occupation: Maryland state senator, District 17; former teacher, community activist.

Elected offices/civic activities: Maryland state senator, 1995-present; state delegate, 1978-95; MD-DC-VA Transportation Planning Board; NIH Bio-Safety Committee; Senate chairman, Federal Relations Committee and Nanobiotechnology Task Force; AAUW; president, Women's Caucus; State Physical Fitness Commission; chairman, Genetic Technologies and Public Policy; Girl Scout Advisory Council; RICA-Montgomery; Top 100 Maryland Women.

What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"The economy, especially budget cuts at the state level that trickle down to counties, where budgets are already stressed with foreclosures, unemployment, elimination of state funds to repair roads and reduced revenue from lower tax assessments. Continue priority focus on our excellent education system. Transportation: anti-gridlock solutions. To lessen the impact of budget cuts to counties, my legislation changes the processing of traffic tickets to save the Montgomery police department $1 million annually in overtime expenses. Also, some of my colleagues and I returned part of our salaries to help with the budget crisis."

Why should voters elect you?

"My legislative experience, seniority, relationships, trust and credibility with elected officials and constituents to accomplish priority needs. Using common sense, asking crucial questions, spending wisely."
