D.C. police investigate fatal hit-and-run

D.C. police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that took the life of a man in Southwest Washington early Monday.Police were summoned to the 2900 block of South Capitol Street SW about 12:45 a.m. and found a man lying in the road.The man was a victim of a hit-and-run, a D.C. police spokesman said, and based on evidence at the scene might have been hit by a Mercedes-Benz.The victim's name and age were not immediately available.

Council chair-electoutlines transition

D.C. Council Chairman-elect Kwame R. Brown said Monday that he would use his eight-week transition to review of council operations. Brown said he wanted to "improve the way the council does business" and to ensure that the government is more "open and responsive to residents."In his first formal news conference since the Nov. 2 general election, Brown (D-At Large) announced his transition would be led by Gregory McCarthy, vice president for government affairs for the Washington Nationals. McCarthy, who was a deputy chief of staff to former mayor Anthony A. Williams, said he is developing recommendations that will serve as a "blueprint, not a dust collector" for Brown's tenure.Brown said he would not accept public funds to cover the cost of the transition and plans to raise up to $150,000 in private donations. Brown said he would accept individual contributions of up to $25,000 and would disclose the names of donors after the transition.Brown, first elected in 2004, said the money would pay for a Web site, research and travel. He said he plans to meet with the leaders of city councils in Los Angeles and Atlanta.

Man found slain was NW resident

A homicide victim found shot Sunday has been identified by D.C. police as a 22-year-old Northwest Washington resident.Marquice Ayers, of the 1400 block of R Street NW, was found about 8 p.m. by officers responding to a report of gunfire in the 2700 block of Langston Place SE, police said.Police said Ayers, who had been shot several times, was pronounced dead at a hospital.The slaying is under investigation by homicide detectives.
