No. 22 Virginia Tech (1-0)

at No. 3 Kansas State (1-0)

Where: Bramlage Coliseum, Manhattan, Kan.

When: 4 p.m.

Outlook: This is the Hokies' first chance to score the marquee nonconference win that eluded them last year. It's all part of a revamped schedule that Coach Seth Greenberg hopes will get Virginia Tech over the hump with the NCAA selection committee. But the Hokies will make their first impression to a national television audience under less than ideal circumstances.

When he decided to schedule this game, Greenberg did not think he'd be traveling to Bramlage Coliseum, known as the "Octagon of Doom," with just one player taller than 6 feet 7. While guards Malcolm Delaney and Dorenzo Hudson are capable of containing the Wildcats' preseason all-American, senior Jacob Pullen, Kansas State has a front court that features four players 6-9 or taller. If Virginia Tech can't hold its own inside, the Hokies' chances for an upset are slim.

George Washington (0-0)

vs. Boston University (0-1)

Where: The Pavilion, Villanova, Pa.

When: 8 p.m.

Outlook: The Colonials open their season in the NIT Season Tip-Off. Villanova hosts one of four regionals. If GW wins both games in Villanova, the Colonials advance to New York's Madison Square Garden. If they lose both games, they move into the consolation bracket. The highest remaining seeds host those games. Each team is guaranteed four games.

Sophomore guard Lasan Kromah is out indefinitely after injuring his left foot on Oct. 30, and he likely will need surgery. Kromah (Eleanor Roosevelt) is the Colonials' top-returning scorer from last season (11.8 ppg). He also ranked second in the Atlantic 10 conference in steals (two per game).

Boston University, which returns three starters from last season's 21-14 team, was picked to win the America East Conference. GW is 7-0 against the Terriers under Coach Karl Hobbs.
