Prince William and Kate Middleton plan to marry in 2011. As Rebecca Omonira-Oyekanmi reported:

Prince William is to marry his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton next year in London, Britain's royal family announced Tuesday. The announcement by Prince Charles's Clarence House office came in the form of a formal statement and a posting to the social networking site Twitter, in keeping with the British monarchy's recent efforts to embrace 21st-century technology.

The Twitter message read: "The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton." The royal family also launched a Facebook page recently.

The use of Twitter by the royal family to announce the wedding was also noticed. As Liz Kelly explained:

Although Prince Charles's office did issue a formal statement announcing the happy news, it was somewhat scooped by the accompanying tweet that distilled the official confirmation of the first major royal wedding of the new millennium into a 148-character (yes, a tad long) social media post:

The royal family only started dipping their blue-blooded toes into social media recently. Tuesday's announcement of Wills's engagement was just the seventh Twitter missive from Prince Charles's official account, which announced itself November 15 with a hearty: "Welcome!" The royals has also made a splashy arrival on Facebook, debuting pages for several members of the family -- including Queen Elizabeth, Prince William and Prince Harry.
