A body was found Tuesday morning in a box along Interstate 70 in Frederick County, and authorities were investigating the death as a "possible homicide."

The discovery was made about 9:45 a.m. by a state highway administration maintenance crew that was working along the westbound lanes of the highway near Braddock Mountain, according to Maryland State Police.

The cause of death had not been determined, officers said.

The box was on a wooded embankment, barely visible from the shoulder of the road, at mile marker 48. Officers said a human body appeared to be in the box.

Officers said the body was that of an adult but declined to provide further details. They said no identification was found. It was not clear how long the body had been there.

The body was taken to the chief medical examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy and efforts to identify it, officers said.
