Two deputy U.S. marshals were burned in the District on Monday when a man they were pursuing suddenly set himself on fire, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 8 a.m. in the Logan Circle area, as marshals were trying to serve a warrant on a man who had failed to appear at a Superior Court hearing, a Marshals service spokesman said.

At a house in the 1200 block of N Street NW, they saw the man head for a basement, then pour gasoline on himself, said the spokesman, Cole Barnhart."By the time they got to him,'' he said, "he had lit himself on fire."

Gasoline on the floor at his feet ignited, and the deputy who was nearer him was burned, Barnhart said. The second deputy went to her aid, then called for help.
