A HIT: Dare we say it? Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) looked like an elegant dandy on Sunday. The congressman may not be on top of his taxes, but he's got dressing well down to a science. He played with both geometric and abstract patterns in a mix of basic black, dove gray and white.

A HIT: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (soon to be minority leader) and clan looked smashing at the Kennedy Center. They were coordinated in black and white, but without being too self-conscious about it.

A MISS: At the Honors performances, Kid Rock looked like Grizzly Adams back from a bender.

A HIT: All weekend, Chris Rock excelled at the nerd-chic aesthetic with his skinny tuxedo and thick, black-rimmed spectacles.

A MISS: Actor Tyrese Gibson on Sunday wore a shadow-checked tuxedo with a red bow tie, red vest and red pocket square. No. No. No. He looked like a waiter at a Christmas theme restaurant.

Left to right:

A HIT, BUT NOT A HOME RUN: With Kelly Ripken - attending with hubby Cal - the only quibble is: If you're going to wear a shawl for the photo op, drape it around your shoulders. Don't let it hang there like a bath towel.

A HIT: First lady Michelle Obama wore a cherry-red, matte sequin Naeem Khan gown on Sunday.

A MISS: Honoree Bill T. Jones's partner, the sculptor and set designer Bjorn Amelan, looked like Obi-Wan Kenobi in his kimono-like ensemble.

A HIT: Actress Claire Danes wore a black dress with a low-cut, open back to the White House ceremony. Has there ever been so much flesh on display by a guest there? Probably not, but Danes made it look good.
