A woman was killed and two men were critically injured Wednesday in two crashes involving pedestrians in Prince George's County, authorities said.

A sister and brother were walking home from a nearby library and crossing the exit from Walker Mill Road onto County Road in the District Heights area just after 5:30 p.m. when they were struck by what appeared to be a gold 1990 Honda Accord, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George's police spokesman.

Both were taken to a hospital, and the woman, 28, later died, Johnson said. Her brother, 20, was in critical condition Wednesday night.

The Accord left the scene and was being sought, Johnson said.

Several streetlights were out on Walker Mill Road, creating dim conditions in the area of the crash, Johnson said, but it was unclear whether that was a factor.

About 30 minutes before that incident, police and fire officials said, a man who appeared to be in his 70s was trapped under an SUV after the vehicle struck him in the parking lot of the Mitchellville Plaza shopping center.

The victim suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The driver, said to be an older man, accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal instead of the brake, Johnson said.

No charges have been filed.
