Prince George's County police shot and critically wounded a robbery suspect Thursday night after he shot at them in the Seat Pleasant area of Prince George's County, officials said.

Officers working on a robbery detail responded about 8 p.m. to a call reporting a robbery at a townhouse complex near the intersection of Countrywood Court and Sheriff Road, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a police spokesman.

Police found a young man who fit the description of the robber and stopped him. Johnson said that as police patted down the suspect, he pulled out a gun and shot at officers, who fired back.

No officers were shot or otherwise injured. The suspect was shot multiple times and was brought to a local hospital, police Major Andy Ellis said.

A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene, said Ellis, who added that it was the 106th handgun recovered in the area this year.

"We are very grateful that no officers were injured," Ellis said.
