Dr. Gridlock's tips: Game plans, track work, speed cameras
Football at FedEx
The Redskins football game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers begins at 1 p.m. Sunday . The stadium parking lots open four hours before game time, but the main roads in the Landover area will be crowded, particularly around the Landover Road, Arena Drive and Central Avenue interchanges with the Capital Beltway. Best bet: Take Metro's Blue Line to the Morgan Boulevard Station and walk north a little less than a mile to the stadium.
Red Line repairs
Metro recently completed repairs to the Rockville platform and is about to launch a similar effort at Shady Grove. These projects are part of the long-term rehabilitation program on the Red Line, an effort that will continue through 2013.
The Shady Grove work is scheduled to begin Dec. 17. Because the station is at the end of the line, the work pattern will be different than it was at Rockville. The transit authority says the Shady Grove repairs will be done around the clock, with one side of the platform closed. That means it probably will take passengers longer to board trains and clear the platform, particularly at rush periods.
Metro is timing the work to start during the holiday period, when ridership tends to drop a bit, but this is still going to be difficult for riders at the station.
Workers will replace deteriorated sections of the platform edges with new concrete, an effort that should extend through January. During the spring, workers will replace the platform tiles with a new surface.
Green Line work
Metro also is going to begin some midday work on the Green Line this week. While trains will be sharing one track to get around the work zone between Branch Avenue and Naylor Road, this should not cause any delays, because of the normal gaps between trains at midday.
The weekday work is scheduled to start Dec. 13 and continue through Dec. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Another speed camera
The new camera zone is on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, just south of Interstate 695 (the Baltimore Beltway) in Anne Arundel County, where the speed limit is 55 mph. Until Dec. 29, the owners of vehicles that go at least 12 mph over the 55 mph speed limit will get warning notices. After that, it's a $40 fine.
The state recently removed the camera zone that had been in effect at Route 15 and Hayward Road on the north side of Frederick, because the construction is done.
The other active locations for work zone cameras are the Intercounty Connector construction area on I-95 between Routes 198 and 212, the Baltimore Beltway at Charles Street, the Baltimore Beltway at Liberty Road and the I-95 Electronic Toll Lane project in Baltimore County.
Connector store closing
The Connector Store at the Reston East Park and Ride on Wiehle Avenue is scheduled to close on Dec. 22. This is part of the phased closing of the park and ride as part of the construction of the Wiehle Avenue Metro station, scheduled to be done in 2013. The Connector stores offer transit schedules, brochures, fare cards and passes, and information about commuting options in Northern Virginia.
Several other stores will change their hours starting Jan. 3. The one at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., and from 3 to 7 p.m. The store at the Tysons Westpark Transit Station will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
