Many of the companies with the largest presence in Washington are not based here. These are the top out-of-state employers, based on the number of employees they have in the region. They are listed here in alphabetical order.


Headquarters: Dallas

Employees: 267,720

Local employees: 5,357 (D.C., and the entire states of Maryland and Virginia)

The world's largest communications company moved into a new line of business in 2010: health care information technology. In November, the company launched AT&T ForHealth, which aims to use its mobile technology to reduce medical costs. At the same time, the company is expanding in its bread-and-butter business: mobile broadband. AT&T in the third quarter alone connected 1.6 million ├Čemerging devices,├« such as laptops, notebooks and tablets.

Ahold USA (Giant Food)

Headquarters: Qunicy, Mass.

Employees: 5,766

Local employees: 4,271

Giant, which operates 180 supermarkets in the Washington area, entered into an agreement to transfer the distribution and operations of its dry grocery business in Jessup, Md., to an outside distributor. At the start of December, Giant president Robin Michael stepped down. Don Sussman, executive vice president of supply chain at Ahold USA, will manage the operations of the division until a replacement is found.
