The Post 200 list of private companies is led by the candy giant Mars and includes major construction firms, financial giants, consultants and media firms. Most made cut based on their 2009 revenue; Carlyle Group and New Enterprise Associates made the list because of their standing in the finance industry. They are listed alphabetically here.

Alion Science and Technology is an employee-owned company that provides technical and operational services to the military, civilian government agencies and commercial customers. Its services include running simulations, designing ships and developing training. The company also produces products like aerospace coatings and simulation software. In 2010, the company completed a refinancing that closed a $310 million unit offering of bonds and warrants and a $25 million revolving line of credit. The company said the new structure would provide greater liquidity.
